10 tips for your freshman year
Happy new month and happy independence day fam, it’s a blessing to be able to experience another month and for that we should be grateful.
Well today i decided to do something nice and share some tips for people who just got their independence, the freshers (someone who just started university, a 100 level student).
Starting the university is the first step in gaining your independence, you are in a new environment, on your own and faced with the task of making decisions, no one to monitor you, you can do as you please, your life is literally in your hands.
It sounds so exciting and its exciting but at the same time quite daunting.
The little decisions you make can pave the way for your entire university stay.
I got the help of a friend Fejiro who like me also graduated this year to help compile this tips for you.
So here are 10 honest tips every fresher should read to prepare for the first year.
1. New start
So secondary school wasn’t good to you; you got bullied, you got picked on, you didn’t fit in, well it doesn’t matter here. This is a fresh start for you to determine who and what you want to be.
Oh i was so popular in sec. school, i was in the biggest clique, ermm darling this is the university and quite frankly most people don’t care so its a fresh start for you too. Everybody gets a fresh start.
2. Spend wisely and save
100 level, the year of money growing like grass. Your parents are going to be at your beck and call because they know it’s a new environment and you need some getting used to. They are going to send you money whenever you call because it’s 100 level. Trust me it might not even get past that first semester.
I can’t stress this enough spend wisely, save save and save …you are gonna need the money!!
3. Choose your friends wisely
Friends are gonna determine how your school life goes and to be clear not everyone you tell hey is your friend. The university is the breeding ground of peer pressure that’s why you need good people around you.
No pressure it’s your first year, you are gonna meet a lot of people there’s no rush to make close friends. Be friendly, yes! but go with the flow, observe and be watchful. Once you notice qualities in someone you don’t like or can’t accommodate, let them be. You can’t be friends with everybody.
4. Make friends with important authorities
You may need help from these people one day, be friendly, greet, occasionally buy em things (trust me it helps). To be honest you have to suck up and kiss ass, forming tough guy won’t help you through some kind of situations. Surely you would need a favor and these authorities you are friends with will show up for you.
What kind of situations you ask? when you need a good room in hostel, registration issues, clearance time. Your G’s would help with that. Take this friendship very seriously and also don’t throw people under the bus for favors, that’s not how you do it.
5. Don’t rush into a relationship and beware of October rush
There is something in my school called October rush, in Fejiros’ its called august rush, in yours it might be something else but the concept is the same. Higher level boys are gonna try to get as much ass as they can from fresh students. So girls be careful, open your eyes don’t fall for any
- I’ve never had any girlfriend in this school before, you’re are going to be my first.
- I’ve been so focused on church and my books, so relationships couldn’t work but immediately i saw you i knew it was meant to be
Yes you’ve never had a boyfriend, a boy has never told you he liked you before or he can’t get over your beauty… calm down . It’s gonna happen so often it would become nothing, some boys would literally tell you they love you immediately you tell them your name. Don’t let the attention get to your head.
Relax! Get a lay of the land, study the people and environment.
University is not all bout boyfriend. You don’t want to be the girl/boy with stories going around in 100level because trust me it’s going to stick .
You mustn’t experience everything, learn from people’s experiences.
7. Smoking weed and popping pills is not a competition
First of all i don’t need to tell you that you shouldn’t be smoking nothing or popping anything. Is that why you are in school?????? but should you find yourself doing that then it’s not a competition, moderation is key. “Don’t form na me high pass”, catching trips is not a competition, smoking kills, people have died through stuffs like this. It’s not and never would be worth it . Make right choices.
Stay off drugs.
8. Good name is everything
Every choice and decision you make is going to influence your life and determine what your name stands for. Your name is going to go places you’ve not even gone to.
People discuss, gist spreads.
- You sleep with everybody your gist is going to spread as the person who sleeps with everybody
- You pop pills everywhere, that’s what you are going to be known for, even your lecturers are going to know you for it.
- You preach the gospel , people are still going to know you.
- You are super smart, always in class you are still going to be known.
People know you and discuss bout you for only two reason, you are either popular for being good or popular for being bad . It’s up to you to pick, but whichever you choose is going to affect how you are treated even by the lectures and authorities.
9. Never forget why you are in school
To get an education of course, your parents aren’t spending so much for you to have fun and hang out. You are there to read your books and come out with good grades.
- Attend lectures
- Read your books
- Submit assignments
- Write tests and exams ( yes i’ve to write it because some people don’t know this).
- Respect your lecturers
Your 100 level result matters a lot. This is the time you decide what you want to graduate with.
I know you might think it’s 100 level you can always make it up, but 100 level is an opportunity to boost yourself up.
I know situations where someone had over a 4.0 GPA in 100level and the person slacked in 200 but still had a good standing because the 100level boosted it. So also if you have a 1.3 GPA in 100level you are always going to have to try extra to boost it up each session.
It’s easier to hold a GPA than to boost it up, so it’s best to make hay when the sun shines.
10. Let’s not forget
- Don’t be a troublemaker, getting involved in fights right, left and center.
- Stay principled
- Know why you’re there
- Don’t stress out on the little thing
- Have fun
